Demostration Alert: U.S. Embassy Lima, Perú
Location: Perú
Event: Demonstrations, Road Blockages and Airport Closures (December 13, 2022)
Due to ongoing demonstrations in Arequipa and Cusco, the Alfredo Rodriguez Ballón International Airport (AQP) in Arequipa and the Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport (CUZ) in Cusco have suspended operations for December 13. Travelers should maintain contact with their airlines for updates on rescheduling flights. Train service to and from Cusco and Machu Picchu has also been suspended for December 13 and an indefinite general strike has been declared in Cusco, in addition to the ongoing strike in the Apurimac region. Many services in the Cusco area may be affected for an indefinite period of time.
There is a demonstration scheduled for 16:00 today in downtown Lima related to the current political situation. Additional demonstrations are taking place throughout Peru. U.S. citizens should avoid these and other demonstrations. Blockages at various points along the Pan-American Highway continue, affecting road travel. Additional locations throughout Peru may also be affected without notice. Please remember that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can quickly escalate and turn violent.

- Comply with instructions from the Peruvian National Police and local authorities
