U.S. Chamber President and CEO Suzanne P. Clark joined Fox Business’ The Claman Countdown on January 22 to highlight the economic benefits of sustained 3% GDP growth and the harmful impacts of tariffs on small businesses, manufacturers, and the economy broadly. She observed:

“If you think about all the benefits of the pro-growth tax reform that got extended and how good that has been for the economy and how well that sets us up for 2026—if we didn’t have the tax of tariffs, the economy could be on fire. Not only are costs going up and prices going up, but uncertainty is so high.”

A $200 Billion Tax: Small businesses are among those harmed significantly by the novel tariffs, which amounted to a $200 billion tax just on small businesses in 2025, according to U.S. Chamber estimates.

Clark also emphasized the need “to finally get permitting reform done,” as the Chamber emphasized in a Day of Action on Capitol Hill on January 7, bringing together business leaders and lawmakers to press for legislative action.

Optimism vs Uncertainty: Clark stressed that U.S. companies remain resilient. “We just had the third year in a row of record new business starts,” she said. “There are people who are optimistic. There are people who want to build here and invest here, if we could reduce this uncertainty.”

Clark’s remarks align with her call at the 2026 State of American Business address for leaders to embrace free market principles and focus on fearless, growth-oriented policies.
