Consular personnel at the U.S. Embassy in Lima will be providing voting assistance and accepting adult passport renewal applications from eligible applicants on October 2, 2024 between 8:00am and 12:00pm. Appointments are not required for this event, but all participants must come prepared with their identification, any voting materials/ballots they have and/or complete passport renewal packages as detailed below.
For Voting Assistance:
Remember, U.S. embassies and consulates are not polling places. Same-day, in-person voting is not available outside the United States. Many states require voted ballots to reach local election officials by the time polls close on election day (Tuesday, November 5). This event will provide an opportunity for U.S. citizens who want to participate from Peru in the 2024 U.S. elections to obtain information and turn in ballots or registration and absentee ballot requests that will be mailed to their local election officials through the diplomatic pouch. Please review the information of our most recent voting message in order to prepare your voter registration, absentee ballot request, or voted ballot in advance of the Open House event, if possible.
If you aren’t able to attend the Open House on October 2, you can still get voting assistance from the embassy or drop off your completed voting forms and ballots, addressed to your local election officials in an envelope with appropriate postage, during the following days and times, except Peruvian and U.S. holidays:
U.S. Embassy Lima: Monday – Friday, 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
Consular Agency Cusco: Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.
For Adult Passport Renewal:
Consular personnel will accept adult passport renewal applications from individuals eligible to use the DS-82 form. Appointments are not necessary during the Open House event October 2, 2024 from 8:00am to 12:00pm. Applicants must verify their eligibility and prepare the application package using the instructions below:
ARE YOU ELIGIBLE?
You are eligible to renew by mail or appointment-free drop-box if you can answer YES to all of the following:
- My most recent U.S. passport was issued within the last 15 years.
- I was at least 16 years old when my most recent U.S. passport was issued.
- I can submit my most recent passport, which has/had a 10 year validity.
- This passport was not damaged, mutilated, lost, or stolen.
- If seeking name change, I can provide legal documents as evidence.
If you answered NO to any of the statements above, you are NOT eligible to renew your passport by mail or drop box and need to make an in-person passport appointment.
STEPS TO PREPARE YOUR ADULT PASSPORT RENEWAL APPLICATION:
- Obtain one color passport photo 5 cm x 5 cm (2 in. x 2 in.) with WHITE background taken within the past 6 months. See complete photo requirements here.
- Submit your most recent U.S. passport, plus a photocopy of the photo (biodata) page. We will cancel your old passport and return it with the newly issued passport.
- Pay the $130.00 USD renewal fee online via Pay.gov; list PERU as the location. PRINT out the payment confirmation you receive via email once paid and include it in your application package. Do not send cash or checks to the Embassy.
- COMPLETE, PRINT, SIGN, and DATE the passport renewal form DS-82*. This form is completed online, not handwritten. Print one-sided pages only. Include your Social Security number, a Peruvian phone number, an email address, and an emergency contact. If you are requesting a NAME CHANGE, due to marriage, divorce, or court order, please include proof.
- Include a pre-paid DHL waybill if you wish to have your new passport and submitted documents returned to you via mail. For instructions on how to ship your passport and a list of participating DHL locations, click here. If no prepaid waybill is included, your passport will be held for pick up at the U.S. Embassy in Lima.
U.S. Embassy Lima will debut a DS-82 adult renewal drop box in the near future. Monitor U.S. Embassy messages sent via the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program and posted on the Embassy’s website and Lima American Citizen Services Facebook page for details to come. In the meantime, applicants who are not able to participate in this event can continue to submit DS-82 renewal applications by mail, or make appointments as necessary.
Actions to Take:
- Visit step.state.gov to enroll in the updated STEP to set your preferences and continue receiving alerts and messages from the nearest U.S. embassy.
- Visit the Federal Voting Assistance Program at fvap.gov for everything you need to vote absentee in U.S. elections.
- Keep your U.S. passport and other essential documents up to date and easily accessible.
- Follow the State Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs on social media (@travelgov) as well as U.S. Embassy Lima.
